If something is not covered here, send us a message and we will answer it, hopefully.

Ordering

How do I place an order?

If you want a rope we have in stock, just click on the photo and select "add to order". If you want a custom color, use the order form. Each order is responded to individually with confirmed pricing, payment instructions, and any follow-up questions we may have. For more info check out the Custom Orders page.

Do I pay on the site?

Not yet. That stuff gets complicated for independent businesses and we're bad at capitalism. So for now we use Venmo, CashApp, and PayPal - the instructions for each will be provided in your response email.

What payment methods do you take?

As of right now, we are only set up to take Venmo, CashApp, and PayPal. We're planning on creating a fancy website payment system as soon as one of us learns math.

How long until my order ships?

That completely depends on order volume, available in-stock inventory, rope elf availability, and natural and unnatural disasters. More than two weeks would be pretty unusual though.

Can I order a single rope?

Sure can - as long as it's one of our basic ropes or an available multicolor rope. Otherwise custom colors require a three-rope minimum.

Can I change or cancel an order after I send it?

Yep! Sort of. You'll get an email response regarding your order. We'll confirm availability and/or order pricing, at which time you're welcome to change the order. Once you've paid and confirmed, we are most likely locked in. But send us a message anyway and we might be able to work it out.

Do you take returns or exchanges?

Usually not, but we're always going to try to make things right. So send us a message and we will figure out a way to get through this together as friends.

Pricing

How does the bulk pricing work?

For in-stock ropes:

Order three or more ropes and every solid and multicolor rope in the order is 25% off. That takes solid from $20 to $15 and multicolor from $30 to $22.50. You can do all solid colors, all multicolors, or a mix of both. So three solid ropes is $45, six is $90, and six multicolors is $135.

Natural/undyed rope is $15 each at any quantity.

For custom orders:

Custom designs have a three rope minimum, so a custom order always gets the 25% off. One custom multicolor design is $67.50, and one custom solid design is $45.

Does a custom color cost more than a stock color?

Usually not. Unless you want a very specific pattern or something really complicated, we price custom orders the same as in-stock.

Do you do larger quantities or wholesale?

Within reason, yes. We're still a one-man-and-his-rope-elves operation, and thus limited to the laws of time and space. But we're absolutely willing to discuss your needs and see what we can do.

The rope

What is the rope made of?

Jute. That's it. We're simple around here.

How long and how thick is each rope?

Our standard rope is 30 feet long and 6mm thick.

Can I get a length other than 30 feet?

Usually yes. We prefer not to make ropes any longer than 60 feet, but if you need a special length, just include it in your custom order.

How are the ends finished?

We knot them. Simple. Easy. Efficient. If you want another method, include it in your custom order and we'll let you know what's possible.

Is it ready to use when it arrives, or does it need breaking in?

It's ready to go. Each rope is worked by hand multiple times throughout the dyeing and conditioning process. This means that by the time the rope reaches you, it's freshly conditioned and broken in.

Can I use it for suspension?

Our rope is not tested or rated for suspension of people. While we know of those who use it for such endeavors, our rope is intended to be used for ground shibari, sexy play, bondage, and human body decorating. Even then, you should ALWAYS learn how to tie from experienced instructors before using any rope on yourself or another human.

Color

Will the color look like it does on my screen?

Every camera captures color differently, and every screen renders colors differently. We do our absolute best to display them as true-to-life as possible but there's no way of knowing for sure what you're looking at. So it'll be very close, but we're limited by technology.

Will two ropes of the same color match?

As long as they were made in the same batch. If not, then there will almost certainly be some degree of variance. 'Tis the nature of dyeing jute in small batches. We do our absolute best to keep The Basics as a uniform color, though there are a dozen variables that can alter the hue and we can only control about half of them as of now.

Does the color rub off on skin, clothing or bedding?

It can, but we do our best to rinse them and apply a post-dye treatment to prevent them from doing so. Unfortunately there's no way to get it 100% bleed-free when fresh. Thankfully it's pretty easy to clean off of skin and most dyes will wash out of synthetic clothes with some color-safe bleach.

Will the color fade over time?

We've only been in business and using our current dye methods for about two years now, so we can say that we've seen no fade in our most-used personal ropes over the course of two years. If that changes, we'll let you know. Keep them out of the sunlight, though. Obviously.

Can I get a color that is not listed on the site?

What kind of alien science color are you trying to get? Feel free to send us a message and we'll figure out what kind of alchemy is required to make it happen for you.

What is the difference between a multicolor rope and a custom order?

Ropes under Multicolor are ropes that feature more than one color and are currently available, or have been made previously and are able to be reproduced to order. Custom orders are for specific colors or quantities, and can be single color or multicolor.

Can I order something from Previous Designs?

Sure can. Just follow the instructions on the page. Keep in mind that they will be close attempts to match the original design. Each new batch is unique and subject to at least a dozen variables that can change the way the dye and jute behave, of which we can control only about half.

Shipping

Where do you ship, and what does shipping cost?

We ship via USPS, wherever USPS ships to, for however much USPS charges us to ship there. We'll let you know upon the order about how much shipping will be.

Do you ship internationally?

We can certainly try. There are a lot of hurdles in doing so, obviously, but send us a message letting us know where you want it sent and we'll look into what it takes.

Is the packaging discreet?

Absolutely. We believe in recycling EVERYTHING - including our Amazon boxes. So don't be shocked if your ropes arrive in an Amazon box wrapped in masking tape. We're called Chaotic, remember? We're gremlins like that.

What happens if it arrives damaged or does not arrive at all?

We will release the Chaos Gremlins to hunt down and destroy the culprit. Meanwhile, we will work with you to make it right. Just send us a message.

Care

How should I store my rope?

Loosely bound in a cool, dry place. Keep in mind, the rope is a natural fiber and like all things natural, they can succumb to rot, mold, mildew, bacteria, etc. So do not bundle your ropes wet or damp, clean and recondition them when necessary, and check them often for any sign of degradation.

Can I wash it?

Yep! Check out our Rope Care page to learn how.

Does it need re-conditioning, and how often?

Probably. It depends on the type of use. Heavy use or exposure to fluids will degrade the wax and oils in the rope and replace them with nasty stuff. Check out our cleaning and care guide here, and buy our Rope Wax to make reconditioning them quick and easy.

What if it gets wet?

If it gets wet with clean water, hang the rope to dry under a bit of tension via attaching a light weight to it as it dries. If the water is not clean, or the ropes were well-used before getting wet, consult our cleaning and care guide.

When should I retire a rope?

When the rope starts to become fuzzy all over, the fibers aren't wound tight anymore, and/or it feels limp - it's time to retire it to cat tree heaven. If you're not sure, just send us a photo and we'll give you our honest opinion.
